Kokoro Connect & Kokoro Connect: Michi Random FNAR Review #7
Alright, here it is, possibly my favourite anime of 2012 tied with Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita and surpassing Tonari no Kaibutsu-Kun. I will try to keep this short but please excuse me if it’s a bit much.
Kokoro Connect is a 13 episode anime and a 4 episode anime to serve as the true ending about a group of 5 high school students who are in the Cultural Research Club at their school. They begin to experience and are challenged by supernatural occurrences brought about by an entity known as Heartseed. I know, I know, it sounds like any other club drama, Haruhi rip-off. But hear me out. It really makes for a good mostly original drama. And yes technically in this case it would be “forced drama.”
There were a few things that ticked me off when watching it however. Such as, a few clichés in the self discovery that the characters experienced. And some things that seemed to be just like out place or minutely flawed in logic.
Okay, now to the good parts. The theme music was spectacular while the soundtrack was pretty decent as well. The visuals weren’t breathtaking, but they didn’t need to be for the kind of story it was trying to tell and it didn’t subtract from the quality at all. The characters and the drama, romance and humour of them was the best I’ve seen for pretty much this whole year. The five main characters fit their role perfectly and were developed just enough for you to care the right amount about them. Everything about the characters had you guessing and worrying and hoping everything would be okay. The plot was suspenseful and had me watching new episodes with much eagerness as soon as the subs came out. Also, the ending was very satisfying for pretty much everyone although I feel that a properly done follow up wouldn’t be unwelcome.
So that is Kokoro Connect, seeing as I went into it with low expectations I may seem a little biased out of my shock but oh well, I try to do these as objectively as possible. So I’m going to give Kokoro Connect a 9.25/10 and I suggest you watch it. I will certainly rewatch it again and again and I will add the LN’s to my must read list.
